Homelessness is a terrible problem, but is far from a new issue. In the U.S., more than half a million people were homeless in 2019. In Chicago alone, more than 80,000 people are without homes.
The COVID-19 pandemic has made the homeless problem worse. Many millions of people across the country have lost their jobs, and with slow progress being made on stopping the virus, the situation will only worsen. As time passes and businesses remain shut down, many of these millions of people lacking jobs will likely lose their homes.
One local organization, Dupage Pads, has been active in the fight against homelessness. The COVID-19 pandemic forced Pads to shut down its regular church site services. Instead, the organization shifted their housing to local hotels. Currently, Pads is sheltering over 200 people in hotels and providing them weekly meals (non-perishables and microwavable foods).
This past week, Happy Healthy Us conducted a community fundraiser to generate donations to support Pads’ weekly food initiative. Due to the generosity of the local community, we were able to donate enough food to provide the majority of the weekly food supply.
In times like this, it is even more important to give and help others.
Thank you to all of those who donated, and I will be sure to keep you updated in our efforts to support our community.
